The world of truth is too dangerous for these vulnerable persons, so we must bubble wrap knowledge as to not harm their sensibilities, so the logic goes. Well, in bubble wrapping the world, we disguise its reality, and that is a surefire way to cause catastrophe. We can’t put blinders on certain corners of the world and expect to come out with a proper understanding of how it functions. The political climate is not hospitable to truth-seekers. The only reason the Intellectual Dark Web is “dark” is because it is controversial to be an open inquirer.
That particular interview is not the point to make this on though. Until seeing that interview I would have wholeheartedly agreed with you on Newman’s general ability as an interviewer. However I came across him first when he picked apart Cathy Newman. If you have not seen that interview i recommend it. He is very calm and coherent when being “Paxo’d” by Newman, who is the bullying patronising party. It is nothing but very, very embarrassing for Newman, and cringing to watch.

There is no unified approach and the term is even made fun of by a number of people in that list.
There are entire cities to sack in the bad arguments and sometimes downright embarrassing claims made by the IDW’s would-be militants for reason and, in this respect, Brooks certainly doesn’t hold back his contempt. Dave Rubin in particular (“mind-blowingly insipid,” “dumb as a rock”) provides ample fodder. Underlying each is a simplistic story of a natural order corrupted, of objective truth obscured by a relativistically minded culture too afraid to face it. If the IDW is attractive to some, the compelling simplicity of its message — that, beneath all the chaos of modern life, there is an immutable order worth defending — is a major reason.

With this in mind, I’ve assembled a twelve-point checklist for evaluating what you might come across on the IDW and beyond. I interviewed Harris in 2018 for a Daily Beast feature on Rubin, and he was very complimentary of both the man and his show. But, Harris said, Rubin was being “captured” by his audience. Fear of offending his right-wing viewer base, Harris said, was why the ostensibly “liberal” Rubin would never criticize Trump for anything, at all. Rubin has frequently said that his political “awakening” (or why he “left the left”) was inspired by watching Harris and Ben Affleck argue about Islam on an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher. Harris was subsequently the first guest on Rubin’s rebooted YouTube show.
When not able to satisfy that need in public institutions, many great thinkers have taken their thoughts to the internet. What these individuals have in common is that, in the pursuit of truth and free expression, they offended arbiters of politically correct opinion. “I’ve figured out how to monetize social justice warriors,” Mr. Peterson said in January on Joe Rogan’s podcast. On his Twitter feed, he called the writer Pankaj Mishra, who’d written an essay in The New York Review of Books attacking him, a “sanctimonious prick” and said he’d happily slap him.

It can be done more formally or less formally—while seated near a Buddhist altar or while snuggled in bed. I suspect this ritual might provide some of the psychological benefits that, as I dimly recall, my nighttime prayer provided when I was a boy. First country to build and deploy drones armed with machine guns. An accompanying promotional video shows the drone in action in a setting that looks authentically warlike—without committing the marketing blunder of showing people on the ground getting killed. I can’t remember the last time I sprang to the defense of an ideological adversary.
- And this gets to the heart of why the Intellectual Dark Web exists.
- He wants individuals to maximise their potential and lead fulfilling lives, and he believes he knows which strategies help achieve these goals.
- C) I laughed when I realize he was basically telling the same story as the Johnny Cash song “A Boy Named Sue” by Shel Silverstein.

“Straw manning” techniques are especially popular and both sides of the political divide do it frequently. This button displays the currently selected search type. When expanded it provides a list of search options that will switch the search inputs to match the current selection. — A reader corrected me that Dave Rubin is actually much more like Sam and Eric in that he has always been liberal, and isn’t a conservative like Ben Shapiro. If we can unify kind and thoughtful people, who genuinely want to make the world better for everyone, and who believe strongly that the way to do that is by talking to each other, then this IDW might be just what we need to survive 2020. I have a few conservative friends and most would agree with these two tenets.
Like many in this group, I am a classical liberal who has run afoul of the left, often for voicing my convictions and sometimes simply by accident. This has won me praise from libertarians and conservatives. And having been attacked by the left, I know I run the risk of focusing inordinately on its excesses — and providing succor to some people whom I deeply oppose. Either an embryo is a human life, or it isn’t. I agree, however the “IDW” did bring it on themselves with their coinage of the term. People these days are just waiting to ideologically identify people, so the bait was too irresistible. The passion of youth may be drawn to the left which highlights social anomalies and injustices. The arrogance of youth is to assume that no one else sees it .
Philosophy Talk relies on the support of listeners like you to stay on the air and online. Any contribution, large or small, helps us produce intelligent, reflective radio that questions everything, including our most deeply-held beliefs about science, morality, culture, and the human condition. The Intellectual Dark Web has developed into an academic counterculture, with an enormous and rapidly growing fan base. While it’s wonderful that there are sites where taken-for-granted orthodoxies can be challenged in accessible ways, I have grave concerns about the way that this movement is unfolding. One of the problems with the Intellectual Dark Web, in common with other online, non-academic outlets for discussing big ideas, is that it doesn’t have have any effective mechanisms for intellectual quality control.
